How we started
Desert Wheels began as a grassroots initiative in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2018, when a group of local volunteers noticed a troubling trend: many residents were eligible for crucial benefits but remained unenrolled. Families were struggling to access programs like Cash Assistance and WIC, leaving them in a cycle of hardship. Inspired to make a change, they sought a sustainable funding model to support the research and outreach necessary to connect these neighbors with the assistance they needed.
Through brainstorming sessions, the idea of utilizing vehicle donations emerged as the perfect solution. Not only did this model provide a much-needed source of funding, but it also allowed community members to turn their old cars into vehicles of hope for their neighbors. Thus, Desert Wheels was born—creating a bridge between vehicle donations and essential benefits for Arizona residents.

Why this city
Arizona, with its vibrant neighborhoods like South Phoenix and Tucson’s 85713 zip code, is home to a diverse population facing varied challenges. Recent studies have shown that areas such as these experience significant gaps in benefits enrollment, particularly for programs like WIC and Nutrition Assistance. The financial struggles faced by families in these communities often prevent them from seeking the support they're entitled to. By focusing our efforts in these specific areas, we can make a profound difference in the lives of Arizonans who need it the most.
