Donate Your Car in Arizona by Dec 31 for This Year’s Tax Deduction

In Arizona, the IRS counts the date your vehicle is actually picked up. Schedule your free Desert Wheels pickup now so it’s completed by December 31 and locked in for this year’s tax deduction.

In Arizona, your car donation only counts for this year’s tax deduction if your vehicle is physically picked up on or before December 31. The IRS goes by the pickup date — not the day you call or fill out the form. To be safe, Desert Wheels recommends Arizona donors schedule pickup at least 3–5 business days before December 31. Our partner nonprofit, Heritage for the Blind (a 501(c)(3), EIN 58-2164446), runs Monday–Saturday dispatch through the holiday season, so you can still get it done in time.

Desert Wheels makes year-end car donation fast for Arizona drivers from Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, and Glendale to Tucson, Oro Valley, Sierra Vista, Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott, and the East Valley. We accept running or non-running vehicles with free towing and no emissions test, inspection, or repairs required. After your car sells, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment (and IRS Form 1098-C when required), but your eligible deduction is tied to the pickup year. If you want this year’s tax benefit, now is the moment to act — start the 2-minute form or call Desert Wheels today and secure your year-end pickup slot.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute Arizona donation form or call

2 minutes

Share your contact info, Arizona pickup address, and basic vehicle details. It takes about two minutes online or by phone. Tell us you specifically need your car picked up by December 31 so we can prioritize a year-end slot.

2

Choose a pickup window before December 31

5 minutes

Our team schedules a towing window that works for you, Monday–Saturday. To protect this year’s deduction, plan your appointment at least 3–5 business days before December 31, especially in busy areas like Phoenix, Tucson, and the East Valley.

3

Prepare the title and remove your personal items

10–15 minutes

Sign your Arizona title according to state rules and clear out your belongings. No emissions test, registration, or repairs are needed. We can often accept non-titled or lost-title situations; just let us know in advance so we can guide you.

4

Vehicle is picked up — your deduction year is locked

15–30 minutes

The tow driver arrives, completes a quick handoff, and you keep a tow receipt. For IRS purposes, this pickup date is the official donation date. If it’s on or before December 31, it counts for this tax year’s deduction.

5

Receive your written acknowledgment and tax paperwork

Within weeks after sale

Your vehicle is sold to benefit Heritage for the Blind. Once it sells, we mail your written acknowledgment and, when your deduction may exceed $500, IRS Form 1098-C. The form confirms the sale price used for your potential deduction.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Pickup date controls your tax year

For vehicle donations, the IRS treats the date the vehicle is picked up as the donation date. If your car is towed away on or before December 31, it is eligible to be claimed on that calendar year’s tax return.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If your vehicle may qualify you for a deduction over $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098-C after the sale. It lists the gross sales proceeds, which generally determines the maximum deduction you can claim.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To claim a tax deduction for your Desert Wheels car donation, you must choose to itemize deductions on your federal return using Schedule A. If you use the standard deduction instead, you cannot also claim a vehicle donation.

30-day written acknowledgment rule

Heritage for the Blind sends you a written acknowledgment, and Form 1098-C when required, generally within 30 days of the vehicle’s sale. This document supports your deduction and should be kept with your tax records for the year of pickup.

Sale price usually sets your deduction

In most cases, your allowable deduction is the vehicle’s gross sales price, not a price guide estimate. There are some limited-use exceptions, but for typical Arizona donors, the amount shown on Form 1098-C is what you use when filing.

FAQ

If I schedule before December 31 but pickup is in January, which tax year is it for?
The IRS goes by the actual pickup date, not your scheduling date. If your car is picked up in January, it generally counts for next year’s tax return, even if you called or completed the form in December. To use this year, make sure towing occurs by December 31.
How late in December can I call and still make the deadline in Arizona?
Around Arizona, we recommend you contact Desert Wheels at least 3–5 business days before December 31. That window helps us fit you into our Monday–Saturday schedule, even in busy metro areas like Phoenix, Tucson, and the West Valley. The closer you get to New Year’s Eve, the fewer slots remain.
Do I get my tax receipt on the pickup day?
On pickup day, you’ll receive a basic tow receipt or confirmation. Your official written acknowledgment and, when the value is over $500, IRS Form 1098-C, are mailed after the vehicle sells. Your deduction still applies to the year of pickup, even if paperwork arrives later.
Can I donate a non-running or unregistered car before year-end?
Yes. Desert Wheels accepts non-running, damaged, or unregistered vehicles with free towing throughout Arizona. No emissions test or repairs are required. As long as we can tow it and complete pickup by December 31, it can qualify for this tax year’s deduction, subject to IRS rules.
Is Desert Wheels working through the holidays in Arizona?
Yes. Our partners operate Monday through Saturday, including the year-end holiday period, in Phoenix, Tucson, and statewide. Year-end is our busiest season, so call or submit the form as early in December as possible to secure your preferred pickup day before December 31.
What Arizona areas do you serve for free car pickup?
We arrange free towing across most of Arizona, including the Phoenix metro (Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria), Tucson and surrounding communities, Flagstaff, Prescott, Yuma, the East Valley, West Valley, and many rural areas. Ask our team about your specific ZIP code when you schedule.
Who benefits from my car donation and is it really a 501(c)(3)?
Proceeds from your donated vehicle support Heritage for the Blind, a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446) providing services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Your donation may be tax-deductible if you itemize, and your tax advisor can help you apply current IRS rules.
