An expired registration will not stop you from donating your car in Arizona. With Desert Wheels, you do NOT need to renew tags, pay back fees, or make the car driveable. As long as you have a valid Arizona title in your name, we can accept most vehicles, arrange a free tow right from your driveway, and you’ll still receive a tax receipt for your donation to Heritage for the Blind.

We verify your title, schedule a pickup that works with your schedule, transfer the vehicle out of your name, and provide a tax receipt. After pickup, the car becomes the charity’s responsibility. You just notify the Arizona MVD of the transfer and remove your plates to protect yourself from future tickets or fees.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you still have your Arizona title
Find the Arizona title for your vehicle and make sure your name is listed as the owner. Current registration does not matter, but a valid, signed title does. If you’re missing the title, you can usually request a replacement through the Arizona MVD or an authorized third‑party office in places like Phoenix, Tucson, or Gilbert before scheduling your donation.
2. Tell us about your car and expired tags
Contact Desert Wheels online or by phone and mention that your registration is expired or lapsed. Share the basics: year, make, model, location (for example, in a driveway in Glendale or a complex parking lot in Tempe), and whether it still runs. We’ll quickly confirm eligibility and let you know exactly what paperwork you’ll need at pickup.
3. Schedule your free Arizona pickup
Once your title is confirmed, we arrange a free tow anywhere in Arizona—whether the car is stranded in downtown Phoenix, Sun City West, Queen Creek, or a rural property outside Casa Grande. The vehicle does not need to be driveable or insured. You choose a date and time window; our towing partner meets you or a designated contact at the vehicle.
4. Sign the title and remove your plates
At pickup, you’ll sign the Arizona title over following our clear instructions. Before the tow truck leaves, remove your license plates and any personal belongings from the car. In Arizona, plates stay with you, not the vehicle. The tow driver will provide any needed paperwork confirmation, and your car will officially be on its way to support Heritage for the Blind.
5. Notify Arizona MVD and keep your tax receipt
After pickup, submit a sold/transfer notice with the Arizona MVD—online or at a local office in places like Chandler, Peoria, or Tucson—to end future liability. Desert Wheels then mails your tax receipt once the vehicle is processed. You can generally claim at least a $500 deduction, and for higher values you’ll also use IRS Form 1098‑C with your tax return.
Potential complications to watch for
No title or title not in your name
Tip: Even with expired registration, we must have a valid title signed by the legal owner. If the title is lost, damaged, or still in a previous owner’s name, contact the Arizona MVD for a duplicate or title correction first. Desert Wheels can explain exactly how the title should be printed and signed before towing.
Car stored in a gated or restricted area
Tip: If your vehicle is in a gated community, parking garage, or storage lot in places like Scottsdale or central Phoenix, the tow truck will need access. Make arrangements with your HOA, apartment manager, or storage facility so the driver can enter. Let us know about gate codes or contacts ahead of time to prevent delays or rescheduled pickups.
Bank lien, loan, or salvage/branded title
Tip: A lien listed on the title or a salvage/branded title doesn’t always block donation, but it can change what paperwork we need. If a loan was paid off but still shows, bring your lien release. For vehicles with salvage or rebuilt titles in Arizona, tell us upfront so we can confirm acceptance and walk you through any extra steps.
Forgetting to notify Arizona MVD after pickup
Tip: Once the car is towed, you still need to file a sold/transfer notice with the Arizona MVD.
