If you’re in Arizona staring at a car with dents, rust, a cracked windshield, or accident damage and wondering, “Can I even donate this?” the answer is yes. With Desert Wheels, body damage does NOT disqualify your car from donation. We work with Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3), to accept vehicles in any cosmetic condition across the Valley, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, and smaller communities in between. Running or not, beat up or just sun-faded, we’ll still arrange a free pickup and you’ll still receive a tax receipt.
Here’s how it works in Arizona: once you schedule your donation, a towing partner comes to you—whether your car is at your home in Mesa, an apartment in Tempe, a repair shop in Glendale, or parked at a workplace in Chandler. You don’t need to fix the glass, pull dents, or touch the rust. The vehicle is sold as-is; your donation value is based on the actual sale price, not how pretty it looks. If it sells for less than $500, you still receive a $500 tax receipt. If it sells for more, you can deduct the higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C. Your problem car becomes real support for people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle
Share the basics: year, make, model, and a quick description of the damage—dents, rust, cracked glass, accident or hail damage. Being honest helps us plan the right tow in Arizona, but cosmetic condition won’t stop the donation. Whether the car is in Phoenix, Tucson, Surprise, or Sierra Vista, we’ll confirm it’s acceptable and walk you through the next step.
2. Schedule your free Arizona pickup
You pick a convenient day and time. We arrange free towing anywhere in Arizona—driveway in Gilbert, alley in downtown Phoenix, storage lot in Peoria, or a mechanic’s shop in Casa Grande. The vehicle can be non-running, missing body panels, or have broken glass. There’s no charge to you for the tow and no requirement to make the car safer-looking first.
3. Prepare only the basics for handoff
Remove personal items from the glove box and trunk, and have your Arizona title ready if you can locate it. You don’t need repair estimates or body shop paperwork. The driver will handle the loading, even if your car has a flat tire or heavily damaged fender. You’ll sign the title, and we’ll explain how the transfer works in your county, from Maricopa to Pima and beyond.
4. We sell the car as-is to maximize impact
After pickup, the vehicle is sold in its current cosmetic condition through our established channels. A clean-body car may bring more, a badly dented or rusted one less, but all are put to use. The actual sale price determines your deduction amount. Either way, Heritage for the Blind receives the proceeds to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
5. Receive your tax receipt and finish your donation
You receive a tax receipt showing at least $500, even if the damaged vehicle sells for less than that. If it sells for more than $500, we’ll send updated documentation and IRS Form 1098-C details so you can claim the higher amount. You’ve cleared that problem car from your driveway or carport and turned it into meaningful help—without paying for a single repair.
Potential complications to watch for
Severe frame or flood damage may affect sale value
Tip: A car with major structural damage, frame issues, or deep flood damage from monsoons or washes can still be donated, but it may only be sold for parts or scrap. That can reduce the final sale amount, though your minimum tax receipt is still $500. Tell us about any serious damage so we can choose the right towing equipment and buyer.
Missing Arizona title can slow things down
Tip: We can often work with donors who don’t have the title in hand, but it may require extra Arizona MVD paperwork or a replacement title. If you’re in Phoenix, Tucson, or any other city and know the title is missing, let us know upfront. We’ll outline what the MVD typically needs so your pickup and transfer aren’t delayed.
Blocked or unsafe parking spots complicate towing
Tip: Tow trucks need clear access. If your damaged vehicle is wedged in a tight carport, on soft dirt, or behind other cars, pickup can take longer. Before your tow day in places like Scottsdale, Goodyear, or Queen Creek, move other vehicles if possible and remove obstacles. If the car is stuck or undrivable, tell us so the right truck is dispatched.
Aftermarket liens or loans must be addressed
Tip: If there’s still a lien, title loan, or financing in place, we’ll need to know before scheduling pickup. Arizona lenders usually must release their interest before transfer. Contact your lender to confirm payoff status, then share what they tell you. We’ll guide you through typical steps so your donation isn’t held up at the last minute.
