Yes, you can donate a damaged car in Arizona today

In Arizona, you can still donate a car with dents, rust, cracked windows, accident or storm damage. Desert Wheels arranges free towing statewide and you get a full tax receipt—no repairs needed.

If you’re in Arizona staring at a car with dents, rust, a cracked windshield, or accident damage and wondering, “Can I even donate this?” the answer is yes. With Desert Wheels, body damage does NOT disqualify your car from donation. We work with Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3), to accept vehicles in any cosmetic condition across the Valley, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, and smaller communities in between. Running or not, beat up or just sun-faded, we’ll still arrange a free pickup and you’ll still receive a tax receipt.

Here’s how it works in Arizona: once you schedule your donation, a towing partner comes to you—whether your car is at your home in Mesa, an apartment in Tempe, a repair shop in Glendale, or parked at a workplace in Chandler. You don’t need to fix the glass, pull dents, or touch the rust. The vehicle is sold as-is; your donation value is based on the actual sale price, not how pretty it looks. If it sells for less than $500, you still receive a $500 tax receipt. If it sells for more, you can deduct the higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C. Your problem car becomes real support for people who are blind or visually impaired.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Tell us about your damaged vehicle

Share the basics: year, make, model, and a quick description of the damage—dents, rust, cracked glass, accident or hail damage. Being honest helps us plan the right tow in Arizona, but cosmetic condition won’t stop the donation. Whether the car is in Phoenix, Tucson, Surprise, or Sierra Vista, we’ll confirm it’s acceptable and walk you through the next step.

2

2. Schedule your free Arizona pickup

You pick a convenient day and time. We arrange free towing anywhere in Arizona—driveway in Gilbert, alley in downtown Phoenix, storage lot in Peoria, or a mechanic’s shop in Casa Grande. The vehicle can be non-running, missing body panels, or have broken glass. There’s no charge to you for the tow and no requirement to make the car safer-looking first.

3

3. Prepare only the basics for handoff

Remove personal items from the glove box and trunk, and have your Arizona title ready if you can locate it. You don’t need repair estimates or body shop paperwork. The driver will handle the loading, even if your car has a flat tire or heavily damaged fender. You’ll sign the title, and we’ll explain how the transfer works in your county, from Maricopa to Pima and beyond.

4

4. We sell the car as-is to maximize impact

After pickup, the vehicle is sold in its current cosmetic condition through our established channels. A clean-body car may bring more, a badly dented or rusted one less, but all are put to use. The actual sale price determines your deduction amount. Either way, Heritage for the Blind receives the proceeds to support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.

5

5. Receive your tax receipt and finish your donation

You receive a tax receipt showing at least $500, even if the damaged vehicle sells for less than that. If it sells for more than $500, we’ll send updated documentation and IRS Form 1098-C details so you can claim the higher amount. You’ve cleared that problem car from your driveway or carport and turned it into meaningful help—without paying for a single repair.

Potential complications to watch for

Severe frame or flood damage may affect sale value

Tip: A car with major structural damage, frame issues, or deep flood damage from monsoons or washes can still be donated, but it may only be sold for parts or scrap. That can reduce the final sale amount, though your minimum tax receipt is still $500. Tell us about any serious damage so we can choose the right towing equipment and buyer.

Missing Arizona title can slow things down

Tip: We can often work with donors who don’t have the title in hand, but it may require extra Arizona MVD paperwork or a replacement title. If you’re in Phoenix, Tucson, or any other city and know the title is missing, let us know upfront. We’ll outline what the MVD typically needs so your pickup and transfer aren’t delayed.

Blocked or unsafe parking spots complicate towing

Tip: Tow trucks need clear access. If your damaged vehicle is wedged in a tight carport, on soft dirt, or behind other cars, pickup can take longer. Before your tow day in places like Scottsdale, Goodyear, or Queen Creek, move other vehicles if possible and remove obstacles. If the car is stuck or undrivable, tell us so the right truck is dispatched.

Aftermarket liens or loans must be addressed

Tip: If there’s still a lien, title loan, or financing in place, we’ll need to know before scheduling pickup. Arizona lenders usually must release their interest before transfer. Contact your lender to confirm payoff status, then share what they tell you. We’ll guide you through typical steps so your donation isn’t held up at the last minute.

FAQ

My car has heavy hail dents and a cracked windshield. Can I still donate it in Arizona?
Yes. Cosmetic storm damage—hail dents, cracked or shattered windshield, sandblasted paint from dust storms—does not disqualify your vehicle. Desert Wheels accepts cars in any cosmetic condition statewide. We’ll pick it up for free, running or not, and the vehicle will be sold as-is. Your tax deduction is based on that sale, with a minimum receipt of $500.
Do I need to repair the body damage before Desert Wheels will take my car?
No. You do not need to spend money on repairs. Dents, rust spots, scraped bumpers, broken lights, or damaged doors are all acceptable. The vehicle’s appearance may affect what it sells for, but it does not affect whether we can accept it. We pick up the car as-is anywhere in Arizona, and you still receive a full tax receipt after it’s sold.
What if my car was in an accident and doesn’t run anymore?
Accident damage and non-running vehicles are still welcome. Whether you were rear-ended on I-10 or sideswiped on Loop 101, we can arrange towing from your home, a tow yard, or a repair shop. Just tell us the extent of the damage and that it doesn’t run. The sale value may be lower, but the donation still supports Heritage for the Blind, and you still get a tax receipt.
How does body damage affect my tax deduction for the donation?
Body damage can reduce what the car sells for, which can lower your potential deduction. Your deduction is based on the actual sale proceeds, not the pre-accident value. However, even if a heavily damaged vehicle sells for under $500, your minimum tax receipt is still $500. If it sells for more than $500, you can typically deduct that higher amount using IRS Form 1098-C.
Will Desert Wheels really pick up my damaged car for free anywhere in Arizona?
Yes. Towing is free to you, whether the car is in Phoenix, Tucson, Glendale, Prescott, Yuma, or a smaller town. The vehicle can have broken glass, missing body panels, or serious dents. As long as we can access it with a tow truck, we’ll arrange pickup at no cost. There are no surprise removal fees, even if the car doesn’t start or has flat tires.
Can I donate a car with rust or sun damage from Arizona heat?
Absolutely. Rust, peeling clear coat, sun-faded paint, and cracked dashboards are extremely common in Arizona and do not prevent donation. Your car will be evaluated and sold as-is, and the proceeds support Heritage for the Blind. You still receive a tax receipt. We understand Arizona vehicles age differently and don’t expect them to look perfect to be accepted.
How fast can I donate a damaged vehicle and get it off my property?
In many Arizona areas, pickup can be scheduled within a few days, sometimes sooner depending on your location and towing schedules. Once you provide the vehicle info and title status, we set a pickup time that works for you. The tow typically takes less than an hour on-site. After the sale, your tax receipt is mailed, and your damaged car is no longer your problem.
